When students are encouraged to set personal goals for themselves they are more likely to take ownership of their learning. For math, if you want students to learn their math facts my colleague Kim told students the test day and told them focus on their goal. The student who sets the goal to get all the factors of 7 correct will be much easier to achieve rather than get all their facts correct. Students feel empowered when they reach their goal.
